Abstract

This is a German manuscript from the first half of the fifteenth century, which contains two texts along with their tables of contents: Albertus Magnus' Mariale and Jacobus de Voragine's De laudibus beatae mariae virginis. The manuscript is composed of two distinct parts and there is some loss of text.

Support: Paper; Extent: 229+i; 300 x 194 mm bound to 311 x 216 mm; Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil lower right, recto; contemporary foliation 1-131 for fols. 1-126 with some skipping but no loss of text; contemporary foliation 1r-99r for fols. 130r-228r; Collation: 1-3 (12), 4 (12, -11 -12), 5 (12, -1), 6-19 (12), 20 (6, -6); Catchwords: Horizontal catchwords near gutter on the verso of the final leaf of the first quire and some on the recto of the first leaf of the following quire for fols. 130-229; Horizontal catchwords near gutter, verso, most of which have been lost through trimming

Fols. 1-126: two columns, about thirty-two to forty-two lines, single vertical and horizontal bounding lines in ink; pricking visible in top and bottom margin; written area: 215 x 145 mm

Several seven- to eleven line initials in red or blue; many three- to six line red or blue initials throughout, some with extensions or more elaborate patterning, such as red stripes or dots against the white paper; headings and punctuation in red; many spaces for initials left unfilled; covers lined with parchment leaves from liturgical books with musical notations
